Tierra del Volcán was created in 1999 as a way of supporting the conservation of the páramos and its valuable resources.
The goal of Tierra de Volcán is to share with our visitors the beauty and uniqueness of the Cotopaxi Region; while supporting the local culture of the Chagra and their traditional systems of production, while promoting the conservation, sustainable use and ecological restoration of its ecosystems. Tierra de Volcán operates on the basis of ecological, social and economic sustainability of land use of its haciendas.
1996 – 2017
| 1996 | University thesis project “Volcanoland” was born as hub focused on adventure and sustainability placed in the heart of the Central Highlands of Ecuador |
| 1997 | Management plan and feasibility studies where performed for Hacienda El Porvenir |
| 1998 | Remodeling of the main house
For sustainability efforts, 200,000 native trees were planted with the purpose of habitat restoration and conservation in Hacienda El Provenir |
| 1999 | Doors opened at Hacienda El Porvenir |
| 2001 | Joint venture with Hacienda Santa Rita for 10 years. We created a concept and a model for tourism in Santa Rita and run the tourism operations |
| 2002 | The first canopy tour in Ecuador was built at Hacienda Santa Rita: Cañón del Salto Canopy Tours.
CUVA project starts (CUVA is a Volcanic Hazard Mitigation Program held with local communities to learn about the hazards of living close to an active volcano) |
| 2003 | Hacienda El Tambo was incorporated to our offer |
| 2004 | We were advisors to the Cotopaxi National Park in the efforts to rebuild the North Entrance and the trail around Limpiopungo Lake |
| 2005 | Together with Fundación Páramo and The Nature Conservancy, we supported the implementation of the Condor bio-reserve |
| 2006 | Creation of the “Guardia Montada Chagra”. Local Chagras become active supporters and implementers of conservation and sustainability programs |
| 2007 | Re-furnishing and beautifying of Hacienda El Tambo house begins |
| 2008 | Hacienda El Porvenir adds new rooms at El Establo building |
| 2009 | New bike trails are open to Hacienda El Tambo |
| 2010 | 200,000 native trees planted for the Forest Restoration Program |
| 2013 | Santa Rita Joint Venture ends. Management of the Santa Rita is given back to its owners |
| 2014 | The new “Cotopaxi High Ropes” program is open to the public
New corporate image is launched to celebrate our 15 years of operation |
| 2015 | Volcanic Activity of Cotopaxi increases and the owners and cooperators need to adapt with new itineraries and strategies. It was important to take into consideration that a substantial amount of support was needed for the community that works with us and our surroundings |
| 2017 | Opening of our new APU Mountain SPA at Hacienda El Porvenir |
