Combine breathtaking scenery, majestic volcanoes, and herds of wild horses in the Cotopaxi Area. Although one of the most beautiful areas of the Andes, this part of the Mountain Range is surprisingly off-the-beaten-path. A super combination of trekking and comfort on Cotopaxi Volcano area staying on comfortable Haciendas. This itinerary will take us through valleys, private conservation areas, and Cotopaxi National Park.

Detailed Itinerary

Acclimatization Hike on The Slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano

We will meet you at Ibis Hotel for the pick-up at 8:30 am to leave Quito early in the morning and drive to Hacienda El Porvenir, where we will be welcomed with a hot canelazo and cheese empanadas. Then we start our hike on the slopes of Rumiñahui Volcano, through exclusive trails at Hacienda El Porvenir. We will traverse agricultural fields and reach the high grasslands of the paramo. On the way, we might see herds of wild horses and cattle grazing. Until we reach the Rumiñahui’s rock base at (4300 m / 14108 ft.).  Packed lunch is included. We will return to the Hacienda El Porvenir house for a relaxing evening by the APU Spa wet area and and overnight stay. The climb takes about 6 hours round trip. (Packed Lunch)

Cotopaxi National Park Trek

After a delicious Hacienda Traditional breakfast, The car will drive us towards Cotopaxi National Park, the entrance is just 4 kilometers from the Hacienda. The drive to the starting point takes about 1 hour. We pass by Pucara del Salitre, and old Inca fortress where we stop for a short visit. We continue to Santo Domingo Lagoon where we start the trek. Following the Incañán (Inca path) eastwards, we enter El Condor Bioreserve, a private bio-reserve where Hacienda El Tambo is located.  We cross hills and valleys, guarded over by Quilindaña, a peak hard to see from the Central Andean Valley. The average altitude at which we walk today is 3,800m (12467 ft). Although we get as high as 4,200m (13780ft) on one mountain pass. We reach the farmhouse, an old Inca Tambo that has been a mountain refuge for centuries. Now rebuilt and rehabilitated it offers simple luxuries such as a warm bed, hot shower, great food, and a crackling fireplace. Today our trek lasts approximately 7 hours. The terrain is mainly flat but there are a few steep hills. By the end of this day, we will have covered 32km (20 miles). Dinner and overnight Hacienda El Tambo. (Breakfast/Packed Lunch/Dinner).

Quilindaña Volcano Trek

After breakfast, we trek the circuit around Hacienda El Tambo, a private conservation area, part of a major conservation project Condor Bioreserve, that connects several National Parks and that serves as a conservation corridor. We reach 4300 mts of altitude and reach Verde Cocha and Yuvraj Cocha two beautiful lagoons on the slopes of this remote volcano. Good possibilities of watching native fauna such as whitetail deer, Andean teals, Andean fox, and endangered species such as the black-faced Ibys, condors, pudus and silvery greebs. The trek takes about 6 hours. Return to the house to enjoy dinner and overnight Hacienda El Tambo. (Breakfast/Packed Lunch/Dinner).

Hacienda El Tambo to Chirimachai Canyon

After breakfast we trek the circuit around Hacienda El Tambo, crossing the Chirimachai Canyon to reach the water springs. At Chirimachai the climate from the eastern jungle rises to meet that of the Central Andean Valley. There is a great supply of natural water, straight from the glaciers of Cotopaxi. The scenery is truly unbeatable. This stretch takes about 4 or 5 hours and is at an average altitude of 3,850m (12631ft). In the course of the day, we walk a total of 22.4km. (14 miles). We enjoy a packed lunch and start our return to civilization to drop you at Ibis Quito at the end of these 4 Legendary days. (Breakfast/Packed Lunch).
